SERANI
SERANI
Doesn’t Play Around
With all the news about daggering and Jamaican musical censorship, I thought it would be cool to talk to Serani, the singer/producer who made Tony Matterhorn’s infamous “Dutty Whine” beat, about sex and his sizzling summer jam, “No Games”. Unfortunately the 23-year-old’s mobile was undergoing a signal meltdown when we rang, so he sounded more like a crackly dalek than Mr Lover Loverman.
Why did you step into the spotlight?
Serani: It was my destiny. I started singing because words and melody just started to fl ow out of my brain.
Jamaica has recently banned all those naughty daggering songs. Are you worried about that?
I make world music, it’s about partying. It’s harmless and fun. It’s the new way to listen to Jamaican music.
You made “Dutty Whine”, which was all about having sex in unusual places. Where do you like to do it?
What kind of a question is that? (crackle)
Serani, are you a womaniser?
I’m not a womaniser. I have a steady girlfriend. That’s not my personality.
Your new song is called “No Games”. I take it your girlfriend isn’t a big sports fan. (crackle)
She doesn’t play games.
No games?
No games.
