We're feeling pretty gangsta this month. Maybe it's because we've got a monkey on the cover baring his hairy balls. Or it could be because we've overdosed on too much M.I.A, Rick Ross, Schoolboy Q, MondreM.A.N, Flatbush ZOMBIES, and last month's cover star A$AP Rocky. Who knows, your guess is as good as ours. All we're really sure about it is that these guys and girls are making some of the hardest music in the world right now and that we've drunk too much sizzurp. Come surf the purple trill wave with us, it's wild. Remember to bring a monkey. If you're not in the mood for some of that ol' gangsta sheeet there's also plenty of other amazing music on this month's playlist, from Jacques Greene and Evian Christ, to an 11 minute Burial epic and a couple of 80s industrial disco selections from Trevor Jackson's amazing Metal Dance compilation. There's also killer album tracks from Perfume Genius, Kindness, Bleeding Knees Club, Frankie Rose and much, much more. Hell, we even threw Gotye's smash hit, "Somebody That I Used To Know" on there. First of all thanks to everyone who checked out our epic end of year playlist, we hope you enjoyed it! Right, let's get 2012 started with a bang! These 30 tracks have been on constant repeat on the Dazed office stereo over the last few weeks, from cover star ASAP Rocky's trill new jam "Pretty Flacko" to British electronic whizz kids Gang Colours, Alby Daniels, Vesel, Beatoven and Ifan Dafydd. We've also been loving Common's hot comeback track "Ghetto Dreams". The sample is so awesome we also had to include the 1967 original by The Fellows, plus some other stone cold classics by Drexciya and Atomic Forest. The last of Dazed's Twentieth Anniversary issues came out this week featuring some of the most influential musical icons of the last two decades on 20 unique covers. As you can imagine, it was tempting to do an indie disco mix featuring PJ, Alicia, Jarvis, Pharrell, Bjork, Damon, Bobby G and pals, but I didn’t want to overshadow all the amazing new music we have elsewhere in the issue. So instead I chose 27 fresh tracks that were on loop during the making of the issue, from A$AP Rocky and Madlib, to David Lynch, Kate Wax, Duvchi and Zomby. As ever, let us know what you think. Every month the Dazed Digitallers hound me to put together this playlist of awesome music. I eventually comply but usually leave it until the last minute to hand over the goods as, to be honest, burning loads of CDs onto my computer takes ages and I'd rather be outside shouting at trees. As it turns out, this playlist was trimmed down from 1000+ songs. I eventually got it down to 98 but realised that no-one would sit through seven hours of music, so I hacked further and ended up with the 38 beautiful tracks you are currently listening to. By the way, don't ever get the Number 38 bus if you're in a rush to get from Oxford Street to Clapton, it takes forever and loads of passengers don't wash their feet. That shit stinks. Anyways, here is the new Dazed Digital playlist, featuring loads of music from our November Photo Special and loads of other stuff I've come across online while searching for porn new bus routes. I could sit here and list the dozens of musical icons, counter cultural legends, fashion heroes, art provocateurs and political revolutionaries that fill up the 20th Birthday edition of Dazed (our biggest issue ever!) but that would ruin the surprise. Yes, I know I’m seriously biased, but do yourself a favour and go pick up a copy this weekend, I promise you won’t be disappointed! And don’t forget to let us know which feature you enjoy the most!   On a personal note, I’d like to dedicate this month’s playlist to the memory of DJ Mehdi, who tragically passed away this week at the age of 34. A good friend of many people here at Dazed, and genuinely one of the coolest guys I’ve ever had the fortune of hanging out with, our thoughts are with his family, and of course everyone at Ed Banger Records. We can’t put into words how much we’re going to miss you and your music. Rest in peace.

What a horrible week. On Tuesday morning I woke up in my beloved Hackney to find five cars outside with their windscreens smashed in, and the charred remains of four more around the corner. Shop windows lay in glassy splinters and petrified local people stood around wondering why the hell their neighbourhood had decided to declare war on itself. It's a sad scene that many of us have had the misfortune of experiencing throughout London and up and down England in the last few days. Youths protesting for a meaningful cause, such as voicing their dissatisfaction at the rise in University tuition fees, is something that Dazed & Confused has always believed in and supported throughout our 20 year history. But stealing products, burning property and wrecking the lives of honest hardworking people is unforgivable. This playlist is dedicated to all those who have suffered at the hands of these mindless pricks but refuse to give in to the fear. Keep your heads up everyone. Let's end things on a high note with some amazing new tracks by The Throne, Lil B, Clams Casino, Iceage, Dum Dum Girls and loads more. Sadly Epic Sax Guy didn't make the cut, but if you've got a spare 10 hours check him out. Enjoy.

For the latest issue of Dazed we handed over the controls to Björk in celebration of her new album/app suite/vision of the future, Biophilia. It’s a wild project that encompasses art made out of DNA, Stefano Pilati crystal jumpsuits, magnetic liquid sculptures, MIDI powered organs, ginger wigs, and a beautifully insane machine called the Sharpsichord. There’s even a dude who stands between two huge Tesla coils and makes music by hurling around lightning bolts. God complex are two words that come to mind for this guy, but we prefer FUCKING AWESOME! We actually tried doing it ourselves by attaching car jump leads to our arms and plugging them into the office electricity supply. It failed. We couldn’t walk for a week. Please don’t try this at home, as you’ll probably die. When we weren’t doing stupid inbred shit like that, we were listening to some huge new tracks by Koudlam, Inc, Com Truise, Hudson Mohawke, Zola Jesus and some of their funky friends. However be warned: there’s no rock n’ roll on this month's playlist. Sorry about that. It's all about futuristic beats. And Jean-Michel Jarre. We hope you enjoy it all the same. And if you’re the first person to guess correctly how many times Björk's name is mentioned in the issue, we’ll treat you to an Iceland party prawn ring. Good luck!

Someone break out the party rings and crack open the keg – it’s the summer music issue playlist!!! To celebrate, not only have we got a world exclusive interview and shoot with Beyoncé in the magazine, we’ve also gone wild and uploaded over 2 hours and 45 minutes of new tracks from the likes of Tom Vek, Zomby, Kreayshawn, WU LYF, Bon Iver, Vybz Kartel, Handsome Furs and Blood Orange. There’s even an awesomely weird Roberto Cacciapaglia track from 1979 I discovered the other day, plus a Gil Scott-Heron classic in the mix as a nod of respect to the late, great, godfather of rap. I know I say this every month, but I reckon this could be the best one yet!

Alongside the global activism portfolio in the latest issue of Dazed, there is a tonne of radical new music that you need to check out. My particular favourites of the month are Ford & Lopatin's nostalgic take on 80s synth pop, Zeus B Held's authentic take on 80s synth pop and Two Inch Punch's evolution of 80s synth pop. Away from the Korgs and Yamahas, we have a huge new track from Sebastian, who ropes in soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne for a Prince inspired jam; Justice, with their prog rock inspired comeback; and an appearance from man of the moment, Tyler, The Creator. If you missed the feature Dazed ran last year on OFWGKTA before the global hype machine took hold, Dazed Digital has uploaded it here. Big shout out to Caroline Ryder for that one. The end of the playlist veers away from the dance floor with the wonderfully named Nguuuni Lovers Lovers, Ear Pwr, Battles, Wise Blood, The Antlers, Gallops, and Trentemoller's dark cover of Chris Isaak's "Blue Hotel". As for MC Nu Thang, well, he's in a league all of his own. Enjoy!

This month's playlist celebrates the triumphant return of Panda Bear, the release of Jamie Woon’s long awaited debut album and loads of hot new records from Wiley, SBTRKT, Cass McCombs, No Joy, The Weeknd, Smith Westerns, Burial, James Pants and the almighty Gang Gang Dance. I know I say this every month, but I reckon it could be my favourite playlist ever. Of course, I’m slightly biased, so if you want some independent – if slightly tipsy – views on a few of these records, listen to Slutever’s Karley Sciortino, Dazed’s Sarah Fakray and Carri Cassette Playa discussing some of the selection with me on the Dazed & Approved radio review show, recorded live at Dazed Live a few weeks ago. As I was putting the finishing touches to this month’s playlist, two of Dazed’s musical heroes passed away within days of each other – Nate Dogg and Smiley Culture. In my grief I was tempted to scrap everything and upload my top 20 Nate Dogg G Funk anthems, but decided against it because you would miss out on all the amazing new music in the latest issue, including Friends, Cold Cave, Gyratory System, Com Truise, Cat’s Eyes, Grimes, Halls and lots of other exciting musical humans. So, sadly, my Nate Dogg megamix will have to wait for another day. I really hope you enjoy the next two hours. I’m off to pour some liquor on the pavement.

Dazed & Confused’s Arizona Muse issue came out ages ago, so you’ve probably been wondering why it’s taken us so long to upload a new playlist for it. Well, apart from Dazed Digital’s manpower being devoted to producing the most comprehensive fashion week coverage on the whole of the interweb, there’s another big reason for its late arrival: I became a Dad! Literally overnight my attention went from beats and basslines, to changing dirty nappies, singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and generally tripping out due to sleep deprivation. It’s been wild. Anyways, apologies for leaving you in the lurch for a couple of weeks, but hopefully these new jams by Tyler The Creator, Metronomy, Guards, Kerogen, Jamie XX and pals will more than make up for it. First of all I just want to say thanks to everyone who took the time to check out our epic Top 100 of 2010 playlist. We've had over 25,000 plays so far which is absolutely amazing, so thank you! I'd also to thank my wife and parents for their continued support, and my cat Smudge... oops, thought I was at the BAFTAs for a minute there. Sorry. Back to business. When 2011 started a few weeks ago I thought it would take a few months for labels to get into the swing of things, but I couldn't have been more wrong. In my opinion, this month's selection is full of certified future classics, from Gruff Rhys's beautiful "Shark Ridden Waters" and Beth Ditto's euphoric solo debut to Creep's amazing collaboration with Romy XX, and the effortlessly sexy "What You Need" by mysterious Montreal pop crew The Weeknd. If 2011 continues at this pace, by next Christmas choosing a top 100 is going to be impossible! We hope you enjoy the tunes, and here's to another amazing year of new music!

When 2010 began, I found myself sitting on a big boulder in the Nevada desert with psyche hop wizard Gonjasufi on one side and a naked model on the other. It was a suitably random start to a year that would produce some of the most eclectic and comprehensive musical editorial Dazed & Confused and Dazed Digital have ever done. Beck's amazing remix of Lykke Li's comeback single "Get Some" kicks off this month's playlist in fierce style, with The Bees' beautiful "Winter Rose", David Lynch's spooky Sunday Best debut and Karen O's ode to stupidity following swiftly behind. Elsewhere, Jamie XX reinvents Gil Scott Heron as a dubstep don, Girl Unit makes a late dash for club single of 2010 with the almighty "Wut", and Jai Paul comes straight outta Rayners Lane with the blog smash "BTSTU".
From there on in things gets pretty gurn friendly with Katy B, Kim Ann Foxman, Wretch 32, Gatekeeper and some other sweaty friends kicking the tempo into the red. On reflection, the inclusion of Deadmau5 and the random midi cover of "Jenny From the Block" makes me think that I've hit up one too many Xmas parties this year. With so much amazing new music in the latest issue of Dazed, it was really difficult choosing which song to start this month's playlist with. Against all the odds, I picked a short track from two underground French electro producers. They’ve just scored this small art house Sci Fi movie and, get this, like dressing up as robots. Crazy. There are also two tracks from Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, an LA crew from the Larry Clark school of thought who rap about drugs, sex, death and skateboarding. If you intend playing this around small children, maybe skip past Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt’s contributions.
If you’re not, turn that shit up! Elsewhere we have dance floor jams from Young Montana, Les Sins, Starkey, Jamie XX and some spooky witch house from White Ring and Creep, who remix Baghdaddy’s “Hot Shit”. Even Chris DeBurgh makes a special appearance at the end courtesy of KGB Man. If you haven’t seen the video yet check it out. I was in a trance for three days after watching it, so be careful. Last but not least there’s a 12-minute epic from this issue's Cult VIP, DJ Screw, who sadly passed away ten years ago this month after drinking too much sizzurp. The latest issue of Dazed & Confused revolves around shape shifting, so this month's playlist reflects that notion, with kraut rock duo Zombie Zombie reinvention of John Carpenter's "Escape From LA", Breakage's dubstep remix of Clare Maguire's "Ain't Nobody", and Party Trash's screwed n' chopped version of Alicia Keys's "Unthinkable". Elsewhere, Pariah, Rustie, Teebs, Gaslamp Killer, Warrior One, Games, Ramadanman and Teengirl Fantasy spin electronica into weird new shapes, while Blank Dogs, Small Black, Gran Trine and Bo Ningen bring up the rear with some fuzzy madness. Even Die Antwoord get in on the shape shifting action with their X-rated collaboration with Diplo. If you haven't seen the video yet, hunt it down. It's really quite something. It seems like an eternity since the last playlist, but then again I might still be tripping after watching Gaspar Noe's Enter the Void. In the latest issue of Dazed we talk to the director about his hallucinogenic Japanese death trip and also his feisty lady leading Paz de la Huerta. In tribute to one of our favourite films of the year I've decided to kick off our A/W winter playlist with LFO's seminal 2004 cut, "Freak", which Noe uses to devastating effect over the title sequence. We then go deeper into different shades of bass culture with Two Fingers, Neon Indian and Bear in Heaven's killer remix of Gonjasufi. Also in the latest issue we go to the Michigan home of screwgaze trio SALEM to chug beer bongs, talk about their debut album King Night and discover if they're as crazy as they've been made out to be. Elsewhere, mysterious producers like Balam Acab, Glasser, How to Dress Well and Gold Panda make an appearance, as do Swedish LOL crunk duo Purpl PoP, Wrexham math rock quartet Gallops, cold wave royalty Frank (Just Frank) and many other amazing new acts. As it's the height of summer, we decided to kick off the playlist with some sunshine pop courtesy of Chromeo, Sky Ferreira and Magnetic Man, followed swiftly by Fourtet's beautiful "Angel Echoes" and The Books' nutty "Cold Freezin' Night". If you haven't seen the hilarious video yet, check it out asap! Fiction, Sleigh Bells, D Double E, El-P. Mount Kimbie and Africa Hitech then heat things up with a mix of bass and distortion, while Clipse's Pusha T steps up with the first solo track off his forthcoming mixtape (rumoured to be produced by Kanye). Things get more experimental towards the end with TEETH, Ghost Hunter, Death In Plains, Visions of Trees, Zola Jesus and more kicking out the dark jams in their own inimitable style. Behold! The stars of April's MUSIC ISSUE of Dazed! Yes, that's right – A MUSIC ISSUE! As you can tell, I'm excited – and hopefully so will you be after hearing this 20 track monster and reading the spanking redesign of Dazed. There's an exclusive remix of cover stars The XX by A Fine Line (aka Ivan Smagge and Tim Paris), plus new tracks from Gonjasufi, Aloe Blacc, Joanna Newsom, Breakbot, FlyLo, Javelin and Caribou. Hell, there's even some nutty punk from 80s noise demon Human Skab and a smattering of Persian funk from Kourosh Yaghmaie. It's bizarre and banging in equal measure. Enjoy!

As we come to the end of the Noughties (damn I hate that term!), I thought it would be fun to knock together a mix of some of my favourite moments in the last decade of electronic music. This has been the decade where bedroom producers truly came into their own, from Prefuse 73 and Flying Lotus, to Burial and The Streets. We've seen the birth of grime, Ed Banger electro , dubstep, glitch hop, and, yes, even the mighty Donk – big up to all the Wigan Pier massive BTW. The songs included are not in any order of preference and the mix isn't intended to be totally comprehensive (my short list alone was 11 hours long and many killer songs fell by the wayside because of an unfortunate BPM!) But, most importantly, I hope you enjoy the next two 1/2 hours and remember all the crazy times that these tracks brought us all. Bring on 2010... Courtney Love may be the big story of Dazed's new issue, but unfortunately she's not too keen on sharing her new music with everyone just yet... which is a shame, but luckily we've got a killer selection of new singles and album tracks handpicked from the new issue to keep your ears warm in this cold weather. There's indie pop (Julian Casablancas! The Drums! Hurts! Siren, Sirens!), noisy stuff (APTBS! Sleigh Bells! Death!), quiet stuff (Connan Mockasin! Laura Veirs! Frankie & The Heartstrings!), electro stuff (Sebastien Tellier! Siriusmo! Breakage!), wild party antics (Jammer! Radioclit!), songs about pregnancy (R Kelly!), a Bon Jovi xylophone cover (WTF!), and even a funky funky Xmas tune (Electric Jungle!) Serve it up with a mug of mulled wine and a large mince pie and you've got yourself a party! And a lot of apostrophes! Yeah! Have a very merry Christmas everyone!

For our Wild At Heart issue, I've featured my favourite track from Karen O's recent Where the Wild Things Are soundtrack (check the latest issue for an interview between Spike Jonze & author Maurice Sendak), plus new tracks from some other stars of the issue: Holly Miranda, HEALTH, Danish pop funks Private and pop starlet Ellie Goulding who recreates Passion Pit's "Sleepy Head". There's also a banging track from my album of the month – Joe Goddard's Harvest Festival – plus new material from Memory Tapes, Washed Out, The Black Keys, Robert Koch, Fenech Soler and Kap Bambino. There's also a new track from the Doggfather himself, Snopp D O double G who I interviewed for the latest issue of Dazed. As he would say, this mix is off the chizzle fo rizzle... or maybe not. Garage rockers The Strange Boys kick off the Imagination issue playlist with a bluesy little number about a poem party. We've never been to one – are they any good? This track makes them sound like a riot! The Texans are followed by Bradford Cox's spooky singalong anthem "Sheila" from his new Atlas Sound album, Logos. We also have big songs from The Drums, Real Estate, Meth Teeth, and a Halloween anthem from Dead Man's Bones. After Young & Lost's new signing Othello Wolf, things get a lil grimy with some digi dub from Jahdaan Blakkamoore, crack rap from Raekwon, and some wonky 2-step from Joy Orbison. For the grand finale Dave 1 and P-Thugg bless us with a new Chromeo track, Private channel the spirit of Bobby Brown, LMFAO get their nasty on in Ibiza, Ebola breaks our bass bins and Diddy pops some Ciroc in the club with DJ Hell. Oh yeah, we can't forget about The Gyratory System, who play us out with one of the most insane tracks of the year. It's amazing, but really intense. Just the way we like it.

Returning art rock legends Devo play a big part in the forthcoming August issue of Dazed, so I thought it would be cool to start off this month’s playlist with one of their best, and most bizarre tracks, “Jocko Homo”. As co-founder Gerald Casale says in our interview, “It was definitely the litmus test. It was not so much a song as a manifesto and a rant that either you got off or pissed you off.” Hopefully you’ll get off on it. If not, there’s plenty more to excite you, with new tracks from Tweakbird, Quad Throw Salchow, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Little Dragon and Gold Panda. We’ve got some killer club bangers in the mix as well, with SMD, Mike Snow, Busta Rhymes, Tobacco, Juice Aleem, Serani and Erick Sermon bringing the heat.

What do you want first, the good news or bad news? Okay, here's the bad news – this month the Dazed playlist has been credit crunched down to 13 tracks. Ouch. But the good news is we're still giving you over 45 minutes of awesome music, starting off with "Treat Me Like Your Mother", my favourite track from Jack and VV's awesome Dead Weather album, Horehound. We then dip into new tracks from We Are Wolves, Tiny Masters of Today, Popo, Duchess Says, Magic Wands, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, L.V, Major Lazer, Let's Wrestle, Deerhunter, Jack Penate, and the title track from Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse's mysterious Dark Night of the Soul project. I wish we could include more songs from the likes of MNEK, Eat Skull, Amanda Blank, Florence, Falty DL, Nosaj Thing and Cortney Tidwell, but, well, it’s out of my control. This month's playlist is another eclectic bag of musical goodness with cameos from several guest stars from the new issue of Dazed & Confused (on shelves 26 May) like White Denim, Miles Anthony Benjamin Robinson, Explode into Colors, Gentle Friendly, Willie Isz and The Dead Weather, who kick out an awesome cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" As usual the mix gets faster as it goes on, with dance floor bangers from Tiga, Toddla T, MSTRKRFT and TEED. Even Ms Kate Moss makes an appearance with a song about a dirty robot. Confused? With 2009 approaching faster than Usain Bolt on ten grams of speed, I felt the time was right to create a playlist that would try and sum up our music editorial this year. However, it quickly became apparent that it was a futile task – after a few hours I could only get it down to the top 208 of 2008. I was quite happy to leave it at that, and even tried to slip its epicness past the powers that be, but I was then duly informed that 11+ hours of banging music would crash our server farm and leave a million Macs orphaned for Christmas. So I relented, and brutally slashed it down to a mix of the top 28 of 2008. Sorry. As such, you shouldn't regard this mix as a popularity contest – it's more a personal recollection of how the year has played out, from the big tunes ("Shake a Fist", "A Milli", "The Bears Are Coming"), to the guilty pleasures ("Beeper", "Falling Down"), all the way through to some of the newcomers who we've helped find an audience (Lykke Li, Hudson Mohawke, A1 Bassline, Bullion etc). I have no doubt that many of you will be wondering, even cursing aloud, as to why TV on the Radio, White Williams, Zombie Zombie, Surkin, Yo Majesty, Rustie, Atlas Sound, A Place to Bury Strangers, Sebastian Tellier, Roots Manuva, Kid Cudi, Kelly Polar, Little Boots, The Cool Kids, CSS, Flying Lotus, and Jay Reatard haven’t made the cut. I wish they were all on here too. All I can say is, buy us a bigger server farm and I’ll pony up the other 180 tracks…   Farming matters aside, 2008 has been an insanely eclectic musical ride; from our guest edited issue by Hot Chip, to world exclusive interviews with icons like Grace Jones and Madonna, all the way through to our early reports on artists like Late of the Pier, Santogold, Danja, Hercules & Love Affair, White Denim, Lykke Li, Florence & the Machine, MGMT, Little Boots, Micachu, Chairlift, and hundreds of other amazing young musicians – it just hasn’t let up for a second. Everyone at Dazed & Confused and DazedDigital.com feels extremely proud of the coverage we’ve put together over the last twelve months for you, and we look forward to doing the same in the New Year.
